STEPPING STONE

A pathway to stability,
growth and new possibilities,
for mothers and children.

WHY STEPPING STONE

As a mother begins to imagine a future again, her child is already growing into one.

GROW INTO POSSIBILITY

In the heart of Athens, Stepping Stone is an integrated, trauma-informed programme for displaced mothers and children, grounded in a structured methodology that brings together child development, psychosocial support, education and protection. For children, play, movement, music, storytelling, creative expression and early learning are not simply activities; they are purposeful tools within this methodology, each linked to specific developmental and psychosocial goals , from emotional regulation, communication and cognitive development to confidence, social connection and participation.

Trained professionals observe each child’s needs and progress, adapting activities and interactions accordingly. In parallel, mothers follow their own tailored pathway through legal, psychological and practical support. By responding to the distinct needs of mother and child without separating their realities, Stepping Stone creates the conditions for recovery, agency and longer-term stability to take root.

For Children

A place where childhood can move forward.

For children whose early years have been shaped by violence, instability and displacement, Stepping Stone brings back some of what childhood should hold: the freedom to play, the joy of learning, the safety to express themselves, and the chance to form relationships and feel that they belong.

Through early learning, therapeutic play, music, movement and creative expression, children gradually rediscover curiosity, confidence and the freedom to engage with the world around them. They learn to recognise and express emotions, communicate their needs, build relationships and participate more confidently in a group, small but meaningful shifts that can open the way towards learning, belonging and a more secure experience of childhood.

HOW WE WORK WITH CHILDREN

Wellbeing and development grow through expression, connection and experience.

EXPERTISE, BROUGHT TO LIFE

Stepping Stone offers children something both simple and profound: a place where they can feel safe enough to be children again.

Behind that sense of safety is a carefully designed, multidisciplinary approach. Our team brings together expertise in child development, education and psychosocial wellbeing, enriched by specialised training in Incredible Me, Nonviolent Communication and restorative circles methodology.

Expertise here is translated into relationships and everyday practice. Week by week, children are met with consistency, sensitivity and an understanding of what lies behind behaviour — creating the conditions to express themselves, regain confidence and gradually build a stronger sense of safety, connection and belonging.

FOR MOTHERS

A mother cannot rebuild her life in isolation from the life of her child.

For many displaced mothers, the barriers do not come one at a time. Legal uncertainty can exist alongside trauma, unstable housing, language barriers, financial dependence and the uninterrupted responsibility of caring for young children. An appointment cannot be attended, a language class cannot be followed, a legal case cannot be understood and a pathway towards work cannot easily begin when there is no safe and trusted place for a child to be.

Support shaped around the realities of women’s lives.:

Our work with mothers is practical, individual and rooted in the realities of everyday life. We stand alongside women through complex legal and administrative processes , from asylum applications, appeals and case re-openings to documentation, social security numbers and access to essential services.

Alongside trauma-informed legal and psychological support, we provide parenting support, help women navigate public systems and everyday bureaucracy, work with them on life planning, and connect them with opportunities for vocational training and employment.

Support responds to what each woman actually needs at that moment, while building the protection, confidence and autonomy to move forward on her own terms.
